Let Us Celebrate the Sweetest Day of the Year ~ Kwentology

Kwento of the Sweetest Day
When: The Third Saturday in October

What is the Sweetest Day?

I once fascinated with the "Bayanihan" of my fellow Filipino people, specially when people used to get together and help others without asking for exchange. Upon making my research I was amazed about this holiday. A day to celebrate candy? Not exactly. A day devoted to sweethearts? That's Valentine's Day, but you're getting closer. Sweetest Day is a day when we remember those among us who are less fortunate. The holiday started in 1922 by Herbert Birch Kingston, an employee of a candy company in Cleveland, Ohio. Kingston wanted underprivileged kids to know that society hadn't forgotten them, so he organized community groups to hand out boxes of candy to the orphans and poor children in Cleveland.

The Sweetes Day started out as a celebration observed in the Northeast United States. As more people heard about the tradition, Sweetest Day spread throughout the country. Now, many people turn the day into an opportunity to reach out to others, giving candy or small gifts to the elderly, the sick, and those in need.
