Lolong's Life — Crocodile Story


It was really a heart breaking news that shook me last night after hearing the death of Lolong. Lolong was the largest among all crocodiles in captivity, measured at 20 feet and 3 inches. Bunawan, a place for where was Lolong captured. People and authorities are sad about this unexpected tragedy. Lolong is a salt-water crocodile (Indo-Pacific). Previously, one of the representative of National Geographic conducted and witnessed the official measurement last November of year 2011.

Life in the Wild and Croc's Purpose


Lolong was the main suspect for killing two persons. One was a farmer and a girl whose head was found two years earlier before Lolong was totally captured and numbers of animals went missing. The team up made by people, local government, and expert crocodile hunters resolved Lolong's captivity. The name Lolong derived from the person who led and was the head of hunting the crocodile. He is Ernesto "Lolong" Goloran CaƱete. He contributed his knowledge as an expert crocodile hunter and veteran. Unfortunately, he died several days before capturing of the giant crocodile.

Lolong becomes a major attraction on Bunawan. He once a big help on the provincial tourism by bringing visitors and foreign guest. Also, he got certification from Guinness World Record and received a title of the "World's Biggest Crocodile in Captivity."

The Death of Lolong


Lolong was found and declared dead last night around 8 PM on February 10, 2013. The reason of his death is really complicated. Based on its keepers, Lolong acted irregularly after multiple Tropical Typhoons devastated Visayas and Mindanao. After officials of the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB) performed necropsy on the animal. They found out that his stomach ballooned and there was none of any foreign objects obtained from the belly. Probably, consumed by Lolong. The stress due to people or visitors around it also added to the reason of his death.

Further investigation acknowledged that Pneumonia was the illness struck Lolong.
