Last July, Forbes magazine released the Philippines’ 50 Richest People for year 2013. Get to know each of them and their business interests. Below is a short profile of the top five (5) men who made it to the country’s billionaire’s list.

1. Henry Sy


Net Worth: $12 billion
Age: 88 years old
Education: Bachelor of Arts / Science, Far Eastern University
Profile: This is the 6th straight year that Henry Sy held the top position in Forbes mag. He heads the country’s biggest shopping mall network, SM Group (i.e. SM Megamall, Makati, Mall of Asia to name a few), the most valuable real estate firm (SM Prime Holdings) and the biggest bank by assets (BDO Unibank). From a net worth of $4 billion back in 2006, it multiplied to $12 billion as of this year.

2. Lucio Tan


Net Worth: $7.5 billion
Age: 79 years old
Education: Bachelor of Arts / Science, Far Eastern University
Profile: This is his 6th consecutive year as well to hold the #2 position. Lucio Tan owns Asia Brewery, the second largest brewery in PH, Tanduay Holdings, one of the world’s largest rum makers, and Fortune Tobacco, the largest tobacco company in the country. He also has some major stakes in Philippine National Bank, PH’s 5th largest bank, The Charter House, a three-star hotel located in the heart of CBD in Makati, Philippines and Air Philippines/Airphil Express, one of the fastest growing carriers here.

3. Andrew Tan


Net Worth: $4.6 billion
Age: 61 years old
Education: Bachelor of Arts / Science, Far Eastern University
Profile: From #6 spot in 2012, he went up to #3 on 2013. Andrew Tan is the man behind Alliance Global, which owns property giant Megaworld as well as the local franchise of fast food McDonald’s.

4. Enrique Razon, Jr.


Net Worth: $4.5 billion
Age: 53 years old
Education: Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, De La Salle University
Profile: Although he dropped one place the year before, his wealth grew from $3.6 to $4.5 billion mainly because of his stake in Bloomberry Resorts and Hotels. He is known for being the chairman and CEO of ICTSI (International Container Terminal Services, Inc), the Philippine port-handling giant.

5. John Gokongwei, Jr.


Net Worth: $3.4 billion
Age: 86 years old
Education: Master’s degree in Business Administration, De La Salle University
Profile: From $3.2 (2012) to $3.4 (2013) net worth, John Gokongwei Jr. controls conglomerate JG Summit which in turn owns budget carrier Cebu Pacific. Among his ventures include Universal Robina Corporation, one of the Philippine largest manufacturers of snacks and Robinsons Land, one of the biggest property developers that also operate a chain of malls.
