President Noynoy Aquino ordered the Bureau of Customs (BoC) to stop unboxing the OFWs Balikbayan boxes as the result of the President Aquino meeting with Customs chief Alberto Lina and Finance Sec. Cesar Purisima yesterday. Officials agreed to use only X-ray examination and K-9 to all Balikbayan boxes without additional payment unless anomalies are found.
When the Balikbayan box is need to be opened, it should be done right in the front of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) representatives or an officer from OFW Association.
The inspection should also be strictly documented by placing a closed-circuit television (CCTV) in the area.
The Customs meanwhile warned their employees that anyone who violated the implemented protocols and caught stealing Balikabayan boxes will face the rightful punishment.
